Computer science degree and learning options
By obtaining an accredited computer science education, students will have the opportunity to enter a number of exciting professional positions. There are a variety of accredited schools and colleges to choose from that allow students to gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the field of computer education. Students may enroll in the program that best suits their individual career goals for the degree of their choice. There are four degrees to choose from including associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
1. Associate degree
An accredited associate degree in computer science can be earned by enrolling in a two-year program. Students will be able to train in specific areas of their desired career. Coursework may vary based on the program attended but may include:
- data structures
- Database systems
- mathematics
- Software Engineering
- systems analysis
With the skills acquired through these types of courses, students will have the necessary preparation to seek employment after graduation. Possible jobs with an accredited associate’s degree in computer science may include computer scientist, systems analyst, database administrator, and many other related occupations. With an associate degree, students have the option to further their training through a bachelor’s degree program.
2. Bachelor’s degree
Students can earn an accredited bachelor’s degree in computer science by taking a four-year education from a number of schools and colleges. Undergraduate degree coursework may vary in this field but typically includes the study of subjects such as:
- Computer programming
- Operating systems
- Website design
- multimedia systems
- Interface design
By acquiring the skills and knowledge provided by a bachelor’s degree program, students can pursue a career that best suits their individual needs and goals. Students can pursue a variety of careers in a number of fields by obtaining an accredited education at this level. Possible occupations include computer consultant, computer programmer, IT worker, software publisher, and more. A bachelor’s degree will prepare students for employment or a master’s degree program.
3. Master’s degree
Master’s degree apprenticeship programs are available for those looking to gain an additional two years of education. Master’s degree curricula vary depending on the program of enrollment and the position sought, but may consist of the study of:
- Computer hardware design
- Web development
- Operating systems
- C++ programming
- java programming
The knowledge gained through an accredited master’s degree program will allow students to enter a number of careers in the field. IT manager, corporate information systems manager, database administrator, computer consultant, and computer programmer are all available positions with a master’s degree in computer science. With an accredited master’s degree, students will be prepared to enter the workforce or further education at the Ph.D. or Ph.D. level.
4. Ph.D./Ph.D
Students have the opportunity to obtain a Ph.D. or Ph.D. in Computer Science. This can be done through an additional four years of training. The study topics in the course vary but may include the study of:
- Operating systems
- computing theory
- natural language processing
- Digital hydrodynamics
- Network and distribution systems
With knowledge and skill in these areas, students will be prepared for careers in computer graphics design, website development, network administration, research, help desk operation, teaching, and much more. By earning an accredited PhD in Computer Science, students can start their dream career.
